Hey Everybody - B. Quirke here,

The 2016 goals decided they couldn't sit in a spreadsheet on my desktop any longer.  They decided they needed to be out in the world. In the open air of support, ridicule and enthusiasm.  

So, I obliged them.  

Welcoming any and all advice and support to see these ambitions through. If anything triggers for you, or I could help make a goal of your own happen, I'd be fired up to help.  

A glimpse into the wide-ranging romp that is my ideal 2016.. 

Finance

  • Increase income by 50% by Oct 1st, 2017
  • Invest savings using the global couch potato strategy - investment split evenly 4 ways between Canadian bonds, Canadian equity, American equity and international equity 
  • No phone data overages – 12 months without exceeding data allotment
  • 'Fliff Fridays' - create a small fund for spending money frivolously with friends and family on one friday every other month 

Professional

  • Organize a daily health challenge for co-workers (commit to donating to a cause you hate if you don’t stick to your healthy habit for 4 weeks e.g. Trump campaign)
  • Arrange and present ongoing research projects to a funding organization not currently tapped
  • Slash 10 hours from current work week through application of the 80/20 principle
  • Get first two publications as lead author into impactful journals
  • Discover my ‘one thing’, my specialization that makes me invaluable

New Territory

  • Participate in a poetry slam
  • Train brain to remember names, quantify progression
  • Paint a painting, display with friends at ‘Two Deep Breaths’ at the playground gallery
  • Release rnb/hiphop song w/ Luc J
  • Meet every month w/ life coach Clare C
  • Kick in a door purposefully 
  • Travel to Japan
  • Weekend getaways – Tofino and old growth, Seahawks game, Okanagan wine tour, Music Festival, Major trail hike, North shore snowshoe

Fitness and Health

  • Overnight oats and omelette each morning
  • Squat 2 plates
  • Secure and visit family doctor Colleen from Continuum Medical Care
  • Pistol squat butt to floor both legs
  • Max 1 small can (222 ml) of soda a day
  • Run a 21 k in Hawaii, run a 21 k in Japan

Connection

  • Secure mentorship from 3 individuals I look up to Montgomerie, Boygo and Kiloh
  • Sit down discussion with Dr. Goldenberg about potential projects or collaborations
  • Set up two friends on top notch suitable dates
  • Win the 2016 Gentlemen's Cup squash tournament

Community

  • Secure position as a weekly column writer for a men’s health resource
  • Launch Hunk Alerts, seek feedback in crafting communications, grow to 1000 members
  • Execute a community survey for a growing Vancouver non-profit
  • Give talk on ‘How Not to Get into Med School’ to UBC undergraduate students
  • Go on first podcast

Relationship

  • Smash unwatched Pixar flicks Wall-E, Brave, Ratatouille, The Good Dinosaur
  • Read every sonnet in Pablo Neruda’s top 100
  • Do monthly mindfulness training offered through work as accountability partners  

For each goal, I pair it with a sponsor (person who holds me accountable to each ambition) and my burning WHY (my motivation and what’s at stake).
